The SOAP Bible Study Method

It’s one thing to simply read scripture, but when you interact with it, when you learn to slow down to REALLY read it, that’s when you make the transition from merely reading to actually studying God’s Word and you are able to dig deeper into scripture and “see” more than if you simply read the verses. Recording your thoughts as you read God’s Word causes you to slow down…meditate upon the Word…and listen for His voice. The SOAP Method is a very effective, very easy way to study the Bible while journaling your thoughts and recording how God is speaking to you during your reading.

The SOAP Method:

The S.O.A.P. method is a simple yet effective way to deepen your understanding of Scripture. It helps you engage with God’s Word in a structured and personal way. Here’s how it works:

S – Scripture

Start by selecting a passage from the Bible. Write out a key verse or verses that stand out to you. Writing it down helps with memorization and reflection.

O – Observation

What is happening in the passage? Take note of important details, recurring themes, or significant words. Ask yourself:

  • Who is speaking, and to whom?
  • What is the main message?
  • Are there any commands, promises, or warnings?

A – Application

How does this Scripture apply to your life? Consider what God is teaching you through the passage. Ask:

  • Is there a sin to avoid?
  • Is there a truth to believe?
  • Is there an action to take?

P – Prayer

End your study with prayer. Thank God for His Word and ask for guidance in applying it to your life. You can also pray for strength to follow His will.

By using the S.O.A.P. method, you can make Bible study more meaningful and personal. Try it with your daily reading and see how it helps you grow in faith!
